How many did you get right?

Now getting back on topic. A winter coat is an investment piece for your wardrobe. If you think about the cost per number of wears (especially if you live somewhere cold!) then your definitely getting your money's worth. If chosen correctly you can wear it year after year, lasting a number of winters.

This is our simple Do's and Dont's guide to buying that perfect Winter Coat.

Style
Do pick a style that suits your personality.
Do stick to a classic timeless style.
Don't buy something that is a big trend for the particular year unless this is the specific reason your getting it and don't plan on wearing it the following year.
Do consider what you shall be wearing the coat for and when you'll be wearing it. For example if your going to be wearing it to the office everyday, you may want to consider a more formal style.
Don't be afraid to get two different styles. One for work, one for play. One for the day, one for the evening.

Price
Do invest in a winter coat. A good coat will last you for years.
Do buy the best for your budget.
Don't buy something you can't afford and get yourself in debt!

Size
Don't buy a size too small.
Do try before you buy if you can.
Do consider what you will be wearing underneath the coat, you may want to go a size up if you are going to wearing thick winter jumpers!
Don't be afraid to go a size up if needs be.

Colour
Do consider buying a colour other than black, vibrant colours can cheer you up on those miserable winter mornings.
Do be realistic though, the bright pink coat may look good on the rack but are you going to want to wear it 24/7. If the answers no stick to more neutral colours.
Do choose a colour that complements your skin tone.

Length
Do check that the length hits you at a point that is flattering.
Do consider what you shall be wearing underneath. If you like wearing skirts and dresses, make sure your hemlines will be covered.

And lastly don't be afraid to hold out for something you love! Remember a coat is a piece you will be wearing on the outside, the first thing people will notice about you, and a piece that will last you years, so it's definitely worth finding something you feel comfortable in, but also something that you will enjoy wearing for years to come.

  3. I really liked this post, I got 5 out of 6, I thought the next coat (no3) might be designer too. I have an Armani exchange coat that I'm now wearing in my 5th year, yep 5th year, it looks good as new and I love the style. I do have other coats but I always go back to it, xoxo.

  18. Love the first and 5th coat! I agree that buying a colour is important but I think getting the staples first is best, like a black coat or beige coat - something you can wear anywhere!
